What is It?
The Language Development Program is part of Lanark Community Programs, and has been providing service in Lanark County since 1979. The main focus of this program is to create environments in which communication is encouraged and where communication skills can grow.
Who Is It For?
- Children or adults who are at risk of developing or who have a developmental disability.
- Parents, caregivers and teachers who care for preschool children or adults with special needs.
- Families concerned that their child may be having trouble communicating.
- Anyone wanting information on speech, language and communication.
What Do We Do?
- Help individuals or families in their own everyday settings.
- Assess a person’s scommunication abilities and design a personalized plan to improve communication.
- Offer individual or group therapy.
- Provide parents, caregivers and teachers with training to help them interact with those who have communication difficulties.
- Offer suggestions and advice to parents, teachers and caregivers.
- Offer workshops on a variety of speech and communication topics.
How Does It Help?
The INDIVIDUAL will:- Learn new ways to communicate with others
- Be able to participate more fully in the community
- Feel less frustrated and less isolated
- Build self-esteem, confidence and independence
- Learn strategies to improve communication
- See the changes in the child or adult because of new skills learned
- Gain a sense of hope
- Receive expert advice regarding communication problems
- Have an opportunity to collaborate with a speech-language pathologist
Who Are We?
All of our services are provided by Speech-Language Pathologists (SLP) registered with the College of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists of Ontario (CASLPO).
The Language Development Program is a partner agency with The Language Express - Preschool Speech and Language Services System of Lanark, Leeds and Grenville. All initial calls regarding a child go to The Language Express, who in turn forward the call to the most appropriate organization: Lanark Community Programs, Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital or Carleton Place District Memorial Hospital.
